The Physics - Mathematics Faculty belonging to the University of Hue was founded in October 1976 on the basis of receiving staff members from the Institute of Hue University and those were trained from Hanoi and Eastern-European countries. In June 1988, the Faculty of Mathematics-Mechanics-Informatics was officially established and divided into 3 departments: Theoretical Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Mechanics.
Since then, the staff of the Faculty has fluctuated. Due to the establishment of the new Faculties and Departments at the University of Hue and the Institute of Hue University, some of the staff members were nominated to work for the Department of Information Technology, the Department of Architecture and Hue College of Economics. Many of other staff members were assigned to different positions at Hue University or in other areas such as Ho Chi Minh City, Ha Noi, Nha Trang, Da Nang. The Faculty always facilitates the staff to upgrade their knowledge level in any way, combining the teaching and scientific research. As a result, from 1 Ph.D holder at the beginning, the Faculty has produced 17 Ph.D holders and 8 MA holders after 30 years of building and development. It is obvious that this achievement was significant, especially as the Faculty was located in Central Vietnam, far from the 2 big cities, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh.
Thanks to the strategy of ceaseless training, the Faculty of Mathematics presently has 28 staff members with 3 Associate Professors, 9 Ph.D holders, 15 MA holders and 1 BA holder. There are 4 departments: Analytics, Algebra, Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics, Applied Mathematics with the training programs as follows:
- Doctoral Degree program: Algebra and Number Theory
- Master’s Degree programs: Analysis, Algebra and Number Theory, Differential and Integral Equations, Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics, Operation Analysis.
- Bachelor’s Degree programs: Analysis, Algebra, Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics, Optimum, and Mathematics Informatics.
- Gifted high school: Mathematics
Through 30 years of training, many generations of students have graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics and have become highly professional at work in different fields such as banking, finance, accounting, post office and information technology.
The Faculty of Mathematics is one of the Faculties paying attention to scientific research. Projects at the state, ministerial and fundamental levels have been annually conducted. Specifically, the staff members of the Faculty took part in 11 fundamental projects, 16 completed projects at ministerial level and 3 implementing-projects at ministerial level. The results have been published in more than 200 articles in domestic and international journals. In terms of international relations, the Faculty has also recorded many achievements. The Faculty annually welcomes many professors coming from the universities in Canada, France, Japan, Germany, Australia and Belgium for academic exchange, research exchange, staff and student exchange. Some lecturers of the Faculty were invited to teach, do the research and practice by universities and institutes in Thailand, France, Canada, Australia, Belgium and Britain. In December 2005, the Faculty and the Association of French speaking universities in Belgium jointly organized successfully the International Workshop on Applied Mathematics in Hue.
