The Faculty of Geography and Geology (formerly known as the Faculty of Chemistry-Biology-Geography) was founded in accordance with the Decree No.426/CP dated 27 October 1976 by the Prime Minister on establishing the University of Hue. Up to 1981, the Faculty of Geography and Geology became an independent Faculty which was separated from the Faculty of Chemistry-Biology-Geography. From 2 initial departments: Geography and Geology, now the Faculty has 4 departments: Geography of Natural Resources and Environment; Cartology, Remote Sensing and GIS; Geology; Hydrogeology and Engineering.
This is the only institution offering undergraduate and graduate courses in Earth Science in the Central Vietnam and Highlands. After over 35 years of building and developing, the Faculty of Geography and Geology has developed ceaselessly in terms of the number of staff, the training scope and form, and scientific research.
The Faculty annually receives 130 undergraduate students in regular form under 3 training specialties: Geography including Geography of Natural Resources and Environment, Cartology, Remote Sensing and GIS, Geology and Hydrogeology and Engineering.
In 1999, the Faculty offered the graduate course in Natural Geography, the Faculty was assigned to offer courses in the field of Geology in 2001 and Geography of Natural Resources and Environment in 2006. Until now, the Faculty has been training 5 Master’s courses in the field of Geology and 1 course in Geography of Natural Resources and Environment. The Faculty has produced 22 students who graduated from their Master’s degree and 32 students who have been pursuing their Master’s degree. The staff of the Faculty have gained plenty of experience in teaching and scientific research. There are now 4 PhD holders, 16 MA holders, 6 PhD students in the country and abroad.
The Faculty’s staff have carried out and participated in many research projects at state level, ministerial level, provincial level, fundamental level and other practical applied research.
The opening of the Faculty of Geography and Geology along with the Faculty of Biology and Faculty of Chemistry is a turning-point in the process of development in all aspects, proving the renovation and development of the Faculty of Geography and Geology at the University of Hue (presently known as Hue University of Sciences). It is also stated that the building and development of Faculty of Geography and Geology is suitable for the demands of the socio-economic development in the Central Vietnam and Highlands in tendency of development of the universities in general and Hue University of Sciences in particular.
