In addition, there were also the participation of representatives of Thua Thien Hue Department of Environmental Protection, Hue City Office of Urban Management and Hue Urban Environment and Public Works State Company.

The purposes of the workshop were to report the results of the completed project “Adaptation of Solid Waste Management to Frequent Floods in Vulnerable Mid-Scale Asian Cities”, of which Hue City was a case study; to introduce the project “Suitable solid waste management to reduce the risk of frequent floods through the rehabilitation of drainage system in Asian cities” to the stakeholders in Thua Thien Hue; and to discuss the collaborative plans between NIES and University of Sciences for implementing the new project in Hue.

The main objective of the workshop was to propose the solutions as well as the strategies to eliminate and prevent solid wastes from hindering water drainage. Specific objectives are (i) to clarify the components, original reasons and affects of solid wastes on the capacity of urban water drainage; (ii) to specify the behavior of throwing solid wastes of citizens and their psychological elements, and (iii) to draw up and popularize the strategies/tools to enhance the awareness on suitable solid waste management and to eliminate the water drainage from throwing wastes. Knowledge and experiences obtained from two projects in Bangkok and Hue will be shared with other member cities of APN through the activities of capacity enhancement.

After the workshop, on 31 May 2017, the research team of NIES and Hue University did the field trip at the sites where floods often occur in Hue city. The project activites  are going to be implemented in Hue by September 2017.
